Is it possible to get Google Group memberships without being an admin?

0

I am working on an application that collects data from Google Drive. One piece of information I need is the groups the authenticated user is part of.

I know it can be done by sending a request to https://www.googleapis.com/admin/directory/v1/groups?userKey=<user email>. However, this request can only be sent by an admin user that has at least read access to groups. Is it correct that there is no other way of getting the groups of the current user?

I would like to be able to make the request with the current user and not have to either a) use an admin user to collect the group information or b) give admin rights to each user of the application. The reason for b) is that it is not possible to assign admin rights to user groups. It has to be given to each user individually which can be a hassle if there are hundreds of users.

When accessing groups.google.com through a browser any user can see groups s/he is part of. I tried to see which request are being made when accessing that page but I could not find any obvious other api end points to use.
