Fast way to query brightness of X server?

0

I've programmed hotkeys to adjust brightness of an X server using xrandr. But to query the brightness by running xrandr --verbose -q takes about 350 milliseconds. For a key whose action is supposed to be instantaneous, the delay is very noticeable.

Is there another, faster way to find out the current brightness level as set by xrandr --brightness? Command line would be ideal, but I'm willing to write C code.
