Disabling searchService in VSCode

The question is, can this service be disabled completely and what exactly will not work?
Background:
Since a few versions ago, we cannot use the VSCode and also not the newest 1.28.2-version. The release 1.23.1 works as expected without troubles and now VSCode stops working and brings up a dialog for reload or waiting. It looks like that the "searchService" task stop working and blocks VSCode.
It should be noted that there is no direct internet connection at the workplace for security reasons. Setting "workspace.settings.enableNaturalLanguageSearch" to false does not help.
