Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is the local governing body for Neath Port Talbot, Wales, UK. Since its creation in 1996 it has been controlled by the Labour party.

Leadership


On 12 May 2017, Councillor Robert Jones become leader of the council, taking over from previous leader Councillor Ali Thomas.[1] The deputy leader is Councillor Anthony Taylor.


Councillor Alun Thomas had succeeded Cllr Derek Vaughan as leader when Vaughan became a Member of the European Parliament in May 2009.

Elections take place every five years, electing sixty-four councillors. The last election was 4 May 2017.[2]

Neath Port Talbot is a Labour stronghold. Labour have been in power in Neath Port Talbot since 1996.[4]



Mayoralty


On 28 September 2017, Councillor Denis Keogh was appointed the mayor of Neath Port Talbot.


The deputy mayor for 2017-18 is Councillor Scott Jones.



Electoral wards


The county borough is divided into 42 electoral wards returning a total of 64 councillors. Some of these wards are coterminous with communities (parishes) of the same name.
