Automatically building Vue.js frontend app with webpack on google cloud build

So I'm trying out google cloud build, used it to create docker images and that's easy and fun, but I don't understand what do I do when what I want is a tar.gz of the 'dist' directory, resulting from running npm run build (which uses webpack).
Here's what I do to build locally:
(pre-step) I have webpack installed globally (webpack is a binary accessible from $PATH)
I run
npm install --only=prod(installing dependencies required to build)I run
npm run build-> that runs and if successful, it creates a directory named 'dist'I run tar to pack the
distfolder to a single file, dist.tar.gz. and this is the end result of my build, which I would want in a bucket in gcp
I managed to figure out to run steps 1-3 in google could build, like so:
steps:
- name: 'gcr.io/cloud-builders/npm'
args: ['install', '--only=prod']
- name: 'gcr.io/cloud-builders/npm'
args: ['install', '-g', 'webpack']
- name: 'gcr.io/cloud-builders/npm'
args: ['install', 'run', 'build']
artifacts:
objects:
location: 'gs://my-bucket-name/'
paths: ['dist']
But I don't see anything in the documentation about running tar, and the above refuses to upload an entire directory.
Is this just something cloud build is not designed to do?
