Mixed HTACCESS with Subdomain and Directory

I'm getting a bit frustrated because I cannot figure out the best way to write my .htaccess



I want api.example.org/foo to redirect show the contents of example.org/api?request=foo, without actually redirecting the user. Is this possible? I also don't want to interrupt example.org, and make sure it only takes place on api.example.org/*.
