Why protractor 5.4.1 with safari 11.1 gets stuck

I am running safari Version 11.1 with the latest protractor.
I have tried this on Saucelab and locally on my machine, I get the same result.
browser.get
works - the page loads.. and.. that's it. nothing else.
I've tried $('body').getText...
or $('button').click()
.. the session seems to be stale.
I've read about safaridriver
and ran the --enable
command on my machine - nothing.
On saucelab I can use safari version 9.0 (before safaridriver) and it kinda works (until I get to an iframe - but I understand this is known issue).
If I try to use something newer (safari 10/11/12) I get the same behavior as locally - the session seems stale after it loads. I assume saucelab is configured correctly and should just work.
I've read a lot online, the problem is there are too many problems/solutions to comb through and I have yet to find the suitable thread.
how can I make safari + protractor (which is selenium on nodejs) to work locally and on saucelab?
I wrote some code for reproduction:
// the test
describe('something', function () {
it('should exemplify a working safari on protractor', function () {
console.log('getting something');
browser.get('/');
browser.sleep(0).then(() => {
console.log('page should have loaded'); // you won't see it due to the bug
})
$('button').click();
browser.sleep(0).then(() => {
console.log('if you see this comment, it worked!');
})
});
})
// the configuration
exports.config = {
baseUrl: 'https://docs.angularjs.org/guide/unit-testing', // any angular web app would do
allScriptsTimeout: 30000,
getPageTimeout: 30000,
capabilities: {
browserName: 'safari'
},
specs: 'tests/*'
}
// my package.json
{
"name": "safari-protractor",
"version": "0.0.0",
"dependencies": {
"protractor": "^5.4.1"
}
}
