History
The inaugural Star Awards event was held in 1994. During the first three ceremonies, MediaCorp handed out only 10 Most Popular Artistes awards (five for each gender), before increasing to 20 (10 for each gender), which would then become a permanent change.[1]
The Best Actor and Best Actress awards were only introduced in 1995. Prior to that, it was more of a popularity contest, with Li Nanxing, Chew Chor Meng and Zoe Tay winning the Most Popular Actor and Actress award, respectively.[1]
In 1995, a top gun of Hong Kong's TVB was one of the guests at the Star Awards. When giving out the award, he commented on the significance of the awards in recognizing television talents, wishing that Hong Kong will have similar television award ceremony in future, which would later went on to produce the TVB Anniversary Awards on November 19, 1997.
The award ceremony has traditionally been held at the TV Theatre on Caldecott Hill, before moving to Mediacorp campus at 1 Stars Avenue starting from the 2016 ceremony, though only two exceptions were held outside the studios, with the first being in 1996 (Harbour Pavilion), and another in 2006 (St James Power Station).[1] Between 2010 to 2014, the ceremony was also held outside location while the show was split into two, with the first show held at Caldecott Hill, while the second show was held at Resorts World Sentosa (2010 and 2011), Marina Bay Sands (2012 and 2013) and Suntec City (2014). Since 2015, the award ceremony were held in the Mediacorp studios since. On each ceremony, a key person in the government (i.e. Cabinet Minister or President) or Mediacorp (i.e. Chairman of Mediacorp) would be ushered as guest-of-honour and presenter for some awards.
Previously, technical category awards (e.g. Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Variety Show Producer, etc.), newscaster and current affairs awards and, for a time, the Young Talent Award (for child actors) were held separately at a gala dinner due to time constraints and results and clips from the event would be shown at the ceremony. Between 2010 to 2015, and again in 2017, those technical awards were presented in Show 1 (or during the three prelude episodes, in 2017), while the Show 2 presented the main awards. 2016 and 2018 reverted the format with the technical category awards presented at an off-site ceremony.
In 2016, the main awards ceremony was split into two shows, to focus on the variety and drama programmes in each show and their programme and performance category awards were split equally.
In 2017, the show was reverted to a one-show program for the first time since 2009. As part of the "3+1" format introduced exclusively for this year, three one-hour prelude episodes aired on Sundays leading up to the main ceremony.
The ceremonies were held annually in April to honour television talents from works from the previous year; prior to the 2007 ceremony, the ceremony were held on December (due to this, no ceremony was held in the year 2008).
With the merger of MediaCorp with SPH MediaWorks on 1 January 2005, nominees now include artistes and shows from MediaCorp Channel U, formerly MediaWork's Chinese language channel. The ceremony was broadcast on Channel U in 2005 for the first time. Since 2014, Mediacorp website Toggle provide live-streaming of the ceremony as well.
Trophy
The Star Awards trophy has seen four different designs, since its inception in 1994.
- 1994: The trophy was a circular column with a star-shaped circle capping the top.
- 1995 - 1997: The trophy was a straight column topped with a gold star.
- 1998 - 1999: The trophy was changed to a cone-like shape with a bigger star.
- 2000–present: A new trophy made in Shanghai was designed, weighing 4 kg and cost S$1,000 each. It is designed with a crystal body shaped in the letter "S", and from another angle, shaped in the letter "A", forming the initials of the "Star Awards". The trophy used to come in different colors every year.
